Hey, is your scalp kind of gross?

It’s not gross. It’s fine to have a body and for that body to be affected by environmental factors. But also, sometimes the result of those factors can be less than favorable. Don’t worry, we can improve upon it. Show us this post or email for $10 off a scalp treatment service, by the way.…

There are so many factors that affect scalp health during the winter months, and most of it has less to do with actual cold temperatures and more to do with the super-dry forced heat we live our lives in during the icy season. Other culprits include sleeping on wet hair, seasonal depression, product buildup, and the tools and fabrics our heads come in contact with. Let’s crack into it, you little freak.

I know it sucks but you really gotta dry your scalp before bed.

No one likes washing their hair in the morning. The drying and styling time is miserable to tack onto an already sluggish start. The fact that it’s pitch-black outside when we’re meant to leave for work inspires absolutely no one to break out the blowdryer and flat iron. I never wash my hair in the morning because I have extensions and I assume clients would be annoyed if I were two hours late because I was trying to wrangle a round brush on myself (I can do a killer job on YOUR hair. My own is not as easy for me). But, if you need to wash your hair in the evening, please take a bit of heat protection and a blowdryer to it before laying your pretty head down. Most people would have no reason to know this, but dandruff is actually a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of a natural organism that exists on each and every one of our bodies- it’s called *malassezia* (what a beautiful name for a girl!) and its a yeast. Guess what yeast likes? Warm, wet, stagnant. Guess what you are when you go to sleep on a wet head? I’ll give you three guesses, bb. Drying your scalp thoroughly will help keep that balance in check.

You’ve got the blues, but your scalp needs you babe!

Seasonal depression is real, and I know that I go through it every year. The effects of depression look different for everybody, but it’s not uncommon to take less care with your physical vessel during those tough times. As much as I understand, I also want to encourage you to push through that. Take the shower, scrub the hair, brush them teeth, get in the comfiest clothes that help you feel like yourself, and go forth, my little dumpling. Keeping your regimen intact and not messing with your wash routine will keep the greasy buildup at bay. This will lead to easier management in the long run. No disasters to deal with is a definite good thing when you barely want to live.

Are ya itchy? Ya scratchin’?

Product buildup is often the problem here, except when there are recurring dandruff infections- those can cause it, too. However, we tend to over-condition in the colder months, trying to compensate for the indoor heat, and this can lead to waxy product buildup. That, plus the hairsprays and dry shampoos and shine sprays required of us for every holiday party, means the need for a deeper clean is there. Come in for a scalp treatment- it’ll make a huge difference.

When was the last time you cleaned your hairbrush?

Most people would say never, honestly. I don’t mean just taking the shed hair out- I mean washed it up and put it in a soapy bath with a bit of disinfectant? Right.. probably never. But that’s all right, I ain’t gonna shame you. Most people who aren’t hairdressers would never think to do that. But it can help cut down on that overgrowth of our girl Malassezia, and can ensure that we are distributing only clean, healthy oils throughout our hair when we brush it. If it’s just time to replace your hairbrush (had it for 3+ years and it cost less than $25? Time to let it go!) pop on in for a new detangling brush- we just got a whole bunch of new ones! In the same vein as keeping your brushes in good shape, make sure you’re keeping your pillowcase & bonnet clean (and dry) and wash your beanies!! WASH! YOUR! BEANIES! Your hats are contributing to your scalp irritation!
